For people just starting out there are so many things to get to know like "what equipment do I need " , "where can I paddle" , " do I need a life jacket " the list is endless . To help answer this I have put together this resources page with information that you might find helpful.
After a few false starts with boards I choose the inflatable irocker nautical. This is a fabulous all round board. I choose the inflatable for ease of transport and storage.
When I purchased my board it came with a manual pump and an electric pump which runs from the cigarette lighter socket in my car. I have however recently purchased a battery operated pump which I can take anywhere.
Yes I wear a PFD - Personal Floatation Device especially when I am paddling alone. I purchased mine from Anaconda. You can also purchase from BCF or your local fishing or sporting goods store.
One of the most important elements we must consider when paddleboarding is wind. Unfortunately, our much-loved sport is highly weather dependent, and the uncontrollable (and often unpredictable) factor of wind can have a huge impact on whether you have a positive or negative SUP adventure (especially, if you haven’t planned for it or can’t read the signs of it changing mid-paddle).
I have a variety of go to apps but the first one I check is BOM METEYE
Why BOM METEYE ? MetEye is an interactive tool for assessing weather forecasts and is used my mariners to find information on forecast winds, waves and weather for an area or specific location. MetEye forecasts are routinely adjusted by meteorologists to better represent local conditions so its more up to date then other apps.
Wear what is most comfortable! Clothing that allows movement and that you don't mind getting wet is best. Once you’ve got the hang of stand up paddling, you won't be falling into the water unless you’re pushing yourself to learn something new. I tend to wear active wear or swim wear. Just remember to wear something that you are happy to get wet and wont be restrictive.
Knowing what I know now I would stick to the lakes and dams. My two fav spots are Lake Kurwongbah and Enogerra Dam. I love both these locations because the only thing you have to worry about is the wind . You can check out more about these on my blog 7 SUP Spots Around Brisbane
